What is a ferrule?
A ferrule is the rubber tip on the bottom of a walking stick or crutch. It grips the ground, absorbs the shock of each step and stops the metal from slipping or clicking. A good ferrule makes a bigger difference to how steady and quiet your stick feels than almost anything else.
Which ferrule do I need?
When to replace your ferrules
Check your ferrules every few weeks. Replace them when the tread is worn smooth, the rubber has cracked or split, or you can see the metal or the grey plug through the base. Daily users usually need new ferrules every few months, so it’s worth keeping a spare pair, especially for holidays. Our Ferrule and Grip subscription sends replacements automatically and saves 10%.
How to change a ferrule
Pull the old ferrule off with a firm twist. Check the grey plug inside the end of the leg is secure, then push the new ferrule on until it sits flat against the end. Watch our how to videos for a step by step guide.
More for your stick or crutch
Pair new ferrules with a soft grip, a clip on torch or a Stick Safe holder from our walking stick accessories and crutch accessories.
